On y croit volontiers.
Plus haut encore sur le Gange… Rishikesh.
After Varanasi and its funeral pyres… the pilgrim travels back up the Ganges towards its source. Haridwar… "the Gateway to God." This is where the sacred river leaves the mountains for the plains. Where families come to perform the Asthi Visarjan… immersing the bones and ashes of their dead in the holy waters of the Ganges. Varanasi burns the body… Haridwar frees the soul.
The Har Ki Pauri ghat is the heart of it all… dense crowds, bells, golden flower lamps set adrift on the current. A single bath here, they say, washes away the sins of a lifetime. It's easy to believe.
Higher still along the Ganges… Rishikesh. The waters here are green and swift, the mountains draw closer, the air shifts. You feel something different the moment you arrive… a lightness.
We attended the Ganga Aarti ceremony at Parmarth Niketan ashram… the largest ashram in Rishikesh. Hundreds of people from every background, every religion, gathered on the banks of the Ganges at sunset… the fire of torches, the chanting, incense smoke rising into the falling night. A suspended moment.
The ashram's guru, Swami Chidanand Saraswati, is a being of rare intelligence and deep humanity… he works tirelessly for the protection of the Ganges, education, medical camps, the environment. The ashram teaches yoga… Hatha, Vinyasa, Kriya… and welcomes pilgrims from all over the world each year. A place that touches something profound within.
